Introducing the ACT II Drama Stars 4-H Club!!

December 1st, 2009

Seven girls in Henry County have been practicing their acting skills in this new and exciting special-interest 4-H Club! The girls love to plan their own skits and puppet shows and perform in front of a wide variety of audiences. Whether it is at a pre-school, a 4-H event, on the radio, or in front of an audience in the community, these 4-H’ers are showing off not only their communication talents, but also working on their teamwork and note taking skills. There is no cost to this club. Everything they need comes right from their own homes, and the 4-H program fee is paid by a county-wide soup supper that Henry County 4-H members host on a yearly basis. Right now the girls are working on a video show. They are using flip cameras, and they will be working on filming and editing. There is definitely not a boring moment in this active, youth driven 4-H Club!

The ISU Extension Region 10 team has been hard at work creating NEW opportunities for all of their youth! Benton, Jones and Linn Counties began creating their NEW special interest clubs by taking a poll of their current 4-H youth. Results from this survey showed that the youth in that region are most interested in being involved with Livestock Judging, Safety and Education in Shooting Sports, and Outdoor Recreation. The team quickly began creating these NEW clubs! Each began with Livestock Judging and they are now into their third month with these amazing clubs! Trainings are held in each county depending on the different judging events about to take place which allows members an opportunity to combine in order to make enough for a team at the different events. Region 10 swine training was held at the Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids with the help of some of their Swine Management students and professor so that the 4-H’ers could get hands-on and experience the excitement of judging! They then had the opportunity to judge at the Iowa Pork Congress youth judging event! In ealry February each county held a beef judging training for their clubs and members have the opportunities to judge at the Frye & Treinen Cattle Judging Contest and/or at the Iowa Beef Expo. Both events are sure to be educational and exciting for the youth!

Linn County is also continuing down the road of change with the development of several NEW special interest clubs. They are teaming up with Jones County for 2010 to create a 4-H Safety and Education in Shooting Sports Club within Linn County. Under way is a 4-H Science Club that meets at the Linn County Science Station, as well as a newly forming 4-H Crafting Club! In addition a 4-H Horticulture Club will soon begin taking enrollments. This club will meet and utilize available space at the historic Granger House Museum in downtown Marion! A Photography Club will also be introduced within the next month to take enrollments, as well as a 4-H Culinary Arts Club! Over the summer a 4-H Outdoor REC Club will be introduced which will offer canoeing, hiking, camping, and fishing experiences to the Linn County 4-H youth! Even with all of the snow on the ground it’s a very busy time of year and a great time in which to get involved with your local 4-H programs!
