If you haven’t already registered to attend the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association 2012 Convention and Annual Meeting, you still have four days to get the early registration discount! You won’t want to miss this 40th Anniversary celebration, because it has a great agenda of top-notch speakers and topics. The convention is Dec. 10-12 at the Prairie Meadows Events Center in Altoona. The full agenda and registration can be found on their website but a few of their key speakers include Montana cowboy Curt Pate on low stress animal handling, Kim Stackhouse, the director of sustainability research at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, and the well-known cowboy humorist Baxter Black who will be providing entertainment on Tuesday evening. They also have policy discussions planned and the trade show.
Early registration ends at 5 p.m. on Nov. 30, and members who register before that time can enjoy all convention events and meals during the three days for just $75. Full registrations after that time will be $125. Any questions can be directed to the ICA offices at 515-296-2266. Hope to see you there!

Drought Webinar

Iowa crop and livestock producers dealing with drought–related issues are invited to attend an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach webinar Wednesday, July 25 to learn more about options available to them. County extension offices will be hosting the 1- 3 p.m. webinar. There is no charge to attend the webinar.

Livestock
Livestock issues covered during the webinar will include options to help producers manage immediate needs related to stressed pastures and reduced hay supplies. “We also will talk about early weaning to reduce cow requirements and supplemental feeding,” said Dan Loy, Iowa Beef Center director. “Other topics facing producers are feeding value, proper ensiling and potential for nitrate toxicity for corn harvested as silage or green chop.”

Crops
Members of the extension crops team will cover the topics of crop growth and development under drought conditions and feeding drought damaged crops. “We will look at current conditions, short-range and long range forecasts, impacts of drought on forages and crops, and impacts on disease and insect development,” said Roger Elmore, extension corn specialist.

Farm finances
Extension specialists will discuss crop insurance coverage, grain marketing implications and valuing drought-damaged corn silage. Possible disaster programs related to the drought situation also will be covered, said William Edwards, extension economist.

Update for Veterinarians

Veterinarians who work with cattle are invited to sharpen their skills and learn the latest information on a variety of topics at a May 30 workshop in southern Iowa. The 19th annual “Update for Veterinarians” will focus on topics of specific interest to beef practitioners, according to Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach beef program specialist Joe Sellers who is organizing the event at the ISU McNay Research Farm near Chariton.

Terry Engelken will present information on identifying fescue foot and other toxicity symptoms, and results of an Iowa-based cow internal parasite survey. Other speakers and topics are Mary Drewnoski with fescue management, Steve Ensley with updated impacts of pyrethroid application on bull fertility, Dan Loy with review of improving digestibility of low quality forages, Stephanie Hansen with results of a forage/mineral study, Grant Dewell with an update from ISU’s Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine department, and Sellers with heifer development strategies and using the Iowa Beef Center’s estrus synchronization planner.

Beef Research Showcase

Are you interested in a 2-for-1 deal? ISU’s Iowa Beef Center and beef nutrition faculty and staff are planning the “Beef Nutrition Research Pre-game Showcase” the morning of the final home ISU football game on Nov. 18.

We hope that having the showcase the same day as the night football game will enable more people to attend and learn about the research being done at ISU.

The event will run from about 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., giving everyone plenty of time to attend pre-game activities before the 8 p.m. kickoff.

The showcase begins and ends at the Beef Nutrition farm, and will be held rain or shine. The farm is located at 3405 North Dakota Ave., approximately 4 miles north of the Highway 30/South Dakota Avenue interchange on the southwest corner of Ames.

Assistant professor of animal science Stephanie Hansen said four graduate students and two undergrads will present current information about the research projects they’re working on.

Thanks to sponsorship from Elanco Animal Health and Titan Machinery, the entire Beef Nutrition Research Pre-game Showcase is free. Greenhorn Grazing Part 3

The third session of the Greenhorn Grazing series will be July 22 starting at 1:30 p.m. at the ISU McNay Research Farm. Producers new to the Greenhorn Grazing program may attend for $15 per meeting. Session three will include pasture supplementation strategies, annual forage crops, mineral strategies, pasture watering systems and fencing alternatives. The session includes presentations by grazing specialists and field demonstrations at local pastures at the McNay Research Farm.

Iowa Grazing Conference Aug. 23-24

The Iowa Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI) will conduct a grazing conference Aug. 23-24, in West Des Moines on Aug. 23 and 24. Featured speakers include Mark Kennedy, Missouri Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) grasslands specialist; Rick Rasby, University of Nebraska; Steve Barnhart, Iowa State University; and Erin Herbold, ISU Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation.

The agenda includes alternative grazing systems, beef heifer development, increasing beef cow efficiency, legal issues for livestock farmers and numerous breakout sessions on topics of interest to graziers. Also producer panel discussions on wildlife and grazing, direct marketing beef and choosing the grazing system that fits your operation. More information and details can be found here.
