New local foods co-op in Eastern Iowa

September 28th, 2011

Ok, so you’re not a farmer but you like the homegrown stuff. Or you want to know where your food comes from and I don’t mean the grocery store. Or you’d like to meet a real live farmer.  The Iowa Valley Food Co-op launched it’s Grand Opening September 21. You can order your food online from many local producers and pick it up in Cedar Rapids.  Maybe you ARE the farmer and you have local products for sale – you can find local consumers through the Co-op.

The Co-op, the second of its kind in Iowa after the one in Des Moines, is the culmination of three years of hard work by various groups.  My friend and Iowa State grad, Jason Grimm, food system planner for Iowa Valley Resource Conservation and Development has been talking about this concept for years and it has finally come to fruition – literally!

I’m  planning to become a member and after looking over the lists of available products, I will be submitting my order when it opens on October 1! Tell me how you find YOUR local food!
