NW Iowa Corn Silage Yields Average 23.5 Tons Per Acre

The Northwest District in Iowa led all districts in 2017 with 2.10 million tons of corn silage produced, according to estimates released by the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. This accounted for 30 percent of the State total production. The Northeast District produced 1.83 million tons of silage, representing 26 percent of the State total.

Iowa’s Per Cow Production Up 25 Pounds Over Jan 2017

Iowa Milk Production Up From 2017

Milk production in Iowa during January 2018 totaled 446 million pounds, up 4 percent from the previous January according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Milk Production report. The average number of milk cows during January, at 220,000 head, was unchanged from last month but 5,000 more than last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,025 pounds, up 25 pounds from last January.

ISU Dairy Farm Has New Manager

Miguel Rangel Is the new manager of the ISU dairy farm in Ames.

Miguel has over 15 years working in the Dairy industry. He grew up in Mexico City and has fond memories of visiting his grandfather’s dairy farm on the weekends. Miguel attended National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City where he obtained a degree in Veterinary Medicine.

WASDE Report For February

The milk production forecast for 2018 is lowered from last month on expectations of slower growth in milk per cow. The 2018 fat basis export and import forecasts are unchanged from the previous month. On a skim-solids basis, the import forecast is raised slightly while the export forecast is raised on strong global demand for skim milk powder, lactose, and whey products. The 2017 production, trade, and stock estimates are adjusted to reflect December data.

Dairy Beef Tour Set For March 27

The I-29 Moo University will host its Dairy Beef Short Course Tour on Tuesday, March 27. The tour is an educational pre-event associated with the Central Plains Dairy Expo in Sioux Falls, and all dairy beef and milk producers plus industry and students are encouraged to attend. The tour includes stops at two feedlots and one auction facility that deal with dairy steers. The $30 registration includes noon meal, educational materials and bus transportation.
