I-29 Moo University Presents Producer Dairy Margins Webinar July 20

The I-29 Moo University 2023 Dairy Webinar Series continues Thursday, July 20 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. CDT with a focus on milk margins.

The webinar will feature Dr. Gonzalo Ferreira, associate professor in the School of Animal Sciences (former Department of Dairy Science), Virginia Tech. Dr. Ferreira will note that indications show that margins are not promising in the near future and that close attention to financial management is as critical now as it was during previous periods.

Cool Cows (and calves): Managing Heat Stress From An Animal Welfare Perspective Webinar On July 19

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team’s 2023 Dairy Webinar Series continues Wednesday, July 19 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. CDT. Dr. Jennifer Van Os will discuss heat stress in dairy cows and calves from an animal welfare perspective, including recognizing how cattle tell us they need help beating the heat.

Iowa Milk Production Up Over ’22

Milk production in Iowa during May 2023 totaled 510 million pounds, up 3 percent from the previous May according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Milk Production report. The average number of milk cows during May, at 239,000 head, was unchanged from last month but up 5,000 from May 2022. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,135 pounds, up 10 pounds from last May.

12 Organizations Submitted 38 Proposals To USDA Concerning FMMO Regulations

June 14 was the deadline for additional interested parties to submit proposals for consideration by USDA as it decides whether to call a Federal Milk Marketing Order (FMMO) hearing. Twelve organizations submitted a total of 38 proposals by the deadline. The proposals deal with almost all aspects of the FMMO regulations, and each proponent was able to explain from a technical standpoint what they have in mind at a Zoom meeting on June 16. USDA said that if there is a hearing it will start on August 23 and be held in a suburb of Indianapolis, Indiana. If it decides to hold a hearing, the actual hearing notice and the scope of the hearing will be announced sometime over the next few weeks.

IOWA FARMLAND OWNERSHIP AND TENURE SURVEY (1982-2022)

The Iowa Farmland Ownership and Tenure Survey was just released and is available on the ISU Ag. Decision Maker website (https://www.extension.iastate.edu/agdm/). The survey was conducted by Economist Wendong Zhang with assistance from PhD student Jingyi Tong. Since 1989, the survey is conducted every 5 years as required by the Iowa code. The survey this year presents a 40 year perspective (1982 – 2022) on changes in Iowa agriculture with implications for the future.

It Will Be Legal To Sell Raw Milk In Iowa On July 1; What Do Producers Need To consider?

In response to questions from producers and industry surrounding the legislation signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds on May 11 the Dairy Extension Team at Iowa State University will be presenting a webinar in conjunction the Iowa State Dairy Association, “Raw Milk For Human Consumption: Issues To Consider”, on July 12, 2023 from 6 to 9 pm CDT. This free webinar will be geared towards dairy producers and potential producers interested in the new rules surrounding raw milk sales in Iowa.
