June Milk Down $1.60 From May

All hay prices in Iowa averaged $169.00 per ton in June according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Agricultural Prices report. This was $3.00 below the May price but $19.00 above the June 2022 price. The June 2023 alfalfa hay price, at $173.00, was $5.00 below the previous month but $16.00 above June 2022. The average price received for other hay during June was $159.00 per ton. This was $2.00 below the May price but $29.00 above June last year.
The average price for milk was $15.20 per cwt, $1.60 below the May price and $10.50 below June 2022. Prices received for milk cows for dairy herd replacement averaged $1,800 per head as of July 1, 2023.

Milk production in Iowa during June 2023 totaled 492 million pounds, up 3 percent from the previous June according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Milk Production report. The average number of milk cows during June, at 240,000 head, was unchanged from last month but up 6,000 from June 2022. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,050 pounds, unchanged from last June.

WASDE Projects Lower Milk Prices In 23 & 24

From the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates released on July 12, the milk production forecast for 2023 is unchanged from last month. The milk production forecast for
2024 is reduced from last month, based on lower dairy cow inventories and slower growth in milk per cow.

Raw Milk Webinar Scheduled for July 12 Canceled

“It Will Be Legal to Sell Raw Milk in Iowa on July 1; What Do Producers Need to consider?” – the webinar to supply information concerning producing raw milk for human consumption scheduled for July 12 – has been canceled due to low registration.

The Dairy Team encourages potential producers to call them directly for assistance or contact other professional organizations to acquire assistance in developing safe protocols and best management practices for their dairies.

Dairy Cow Slaughter Is Up 2 Percent Year To Date

Dairy cow slaughter is up 2 percent year to date and has some similarly large ranges around culling. The largest percent change in slaughter regions is region 6(AR, LA, NM, OK & TX), up 26 percent from last year, followed by region 10(AK, ID, OR & WA), up 16 percent, and region 9(AZ, CA, HI & NV), up 6 percent. The remaining regions have seen a decrease in dairy cow slaughter.

Iowa Hay Acreage Harvested Estimated to Be Down In 2023

According to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Acreage report the total dry hay expected to be harvested for 2023 in Iowa is estimated at 1.05 million acres, down 150,000 acres from last year and down 20,000 acres from the March intentions. Alfalfa harvested acreage is estimated at 730,000 acres and other hay harvested acreage is estimated at 320,000 acres.

Oats planted acreage is estimated at 185,000 acres, up 55,000 acres from last year but down 15,000 acres from the March intentions. Harvested acres for grain is forecast at 45,000 acres.

I-29 Moo University Co-hosting A Forage Field Day Near Beresford On August 7

I-29 Moo University, South Dakota State University Extension, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension, and the Northern Plains Forage Association will co-host a Forage Field Day in August.

Forage Field Day is from 9:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. CST on Aug. 7, 2023, at the SDSU Southeast Research Farm located at 29974 University Rd., Beresford, South Dakota, and will focus on forage sorghum (a warm-season annual grass), and on forage equipment.
