The milk production forecasts for 2023 and 2024 are lowered from last month. The cow inventory
is reduced, reflecting the average July 2023 cow number reported in the recent Milk Production
report. The reduction in cow numbers is expected to continue through 2023 and into the first half
of 2024 as returns remain under pressure. For 2023, output-per-cow is forecast to increase at a
lower rate than previously expected on recent data and the expected impact of high temperatures during the summer. However, the forecast of milk per cow for 2024 is unchanged.

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team’s 2023 Dairy Webinar Series continues Wednesday, September 27 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. CDT, with a focus on feeding for protein and profit.
“The August protein price moved up to 2.08 from the July price of 1.15. This refocuses producer interest on increasing the protein content of their milk,” notes Iowa State University and Extension Dairy Specialist Fred Hall.

The I-29 Moo University 2023 Dairy Webinar Series continues on Tuesday, September 19 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. CDT with a focus on feeding fodder to dairy cattle.
The webinar will feature Brad Heins, Professor of Organic Dairy Management at the University of Minnesota’s West Central Research Center in Morris, Minnesota.
The National Mastitis Council (NMC) named Michelle Buckley, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa among the eight selected as its 2024 Scholars.
The graduate students won an expense-paid trip to attend the 63rd NMC Annual Meeting, scheduled for Jan. 29-Feb. 1, in Dallas. This program strives to support the development of future udder health, milking management and milk quality specialists.

All hay prices in Iowa averaged $171.00 per ton in July according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Agricultural Prices report. This was $2.00 above the June price and $21.00 above the July 2022 price.
