Milk production in Iowa during October 2023 totaled 494 million pounds, unchanged from the previous October according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Milk Production report. The average number of milk cows during October, at 240,000 head, was unchanged from last month but up 1,000 from October 2022. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,060 pounds, down 5 pounds from last October.

The I-29 Moo University 2023 Dairy Webinar Series continues Tuesday, Dec. 19 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. CST. The webinar will feature a discussion on mastitis resistance from older genetics.

The speaker, Dr. Kaitlyn Sarlo Davila, is an animal scientist researching mastitis at the USDA ARS National Animal Disease Center in Ames, Iowa. Her research focuses on understanding the role of genetics in mastitis susceptibility.

New WASDE Report Raises 2024 all milk price to $20.80 per cwt.

The November USDA WASDE milk production forecast for 2023 is reduced from last month as milk cow numbers were revised lower in the most recent Milk Production report, and the lower estimated numbers are carried into the fourth quarter forecast. Growth in milk per cow is also slowed in the fourth quarter with slower-than-expected growth for the third quarter reported in the Milk Production report. The forecast for 2024 is reduced as the lower forecasts of milk cows and milk per cow for late 2023 are carried into the next year.

Annual Dairy Goat Management Seminar Dec. 9 near Sioux Center

Program will inform dairy goat producers about current milk quality and management

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team will host its annual Dairy Goat Management Seminar on Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Dordt College Agriculture Stewardship Center, 700 7th St. NE, Sioux Center. The event will begin with registration at 9 a.m. and the program runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

This year’s focus is on milk quality and functional type animals.
