May 19 Dairy Webinar to focus on Mitigating Heat Stress

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team monthly webinar series continues on Wednesday, May 19 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. with the topic of minimizing heat stress in dairy herds.

ISU Extension and Outreach Agricultural Engineer Brian Dougherty will discuss the elements of ventilation and how to mitigate heat stress in the milking herd. By minimizing heat stress, producers are able to make their cattle more comfortable and better maintain profitability through the hot summer months.

Making the Most of Your 2021 Alfalfa Crop webinar April 21

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team monthly webinar series continues on Wednesday, April 21 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. This month’s webinar will focus on making the most of the 2021 alfalfa crop.

Long-time ISU Extension and Outreach Field Agronomist in Northwest Iowa Joel DeJong will present an outlook for the 2021 alfalfa crop. He will review stand evaluation, fertilizer, and pest threats, as well as discuss how to use Predictive Equations of Alfalfa Quality (PEAQ) to determine when to harvest the highest-quality forage.

“Dairy producers, and all livestock producers really, rely on quality forage to help their herds maximize profits,” said Fred Hall, dairy specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “That is why we encourage producers, dairy consultants and related industry reps to attend this webinar.”

Lee Maassen Named ISU Dairy Club Honorary Member

On Sunday, March 14, the Dairy Science Club at Iowa State University hosted the annual Dairy Science Banquet. Animal science faculty, club members, and alumni are invited each year to recognize departmental and club success. One particular award, the Dairy Science Club Honorary Member Award, gets voted on by club members prior to the banquet. This year’s recipient is Leroy Maassen of Maurice, Iowa.

WASDE Projects 2021 All Milk Price at $17.75 per cwt

The World Agricultural Supply and Demand estimates on Tuesday saw corn and soy supply and use mostly unchanged.

The 2020 milk production estimate is adjusted to reflect recent data revisions. For 2021, the milk production forecast is lowered slightly from last month as a higher expected cow inventory is more than offset by slower growth in milk per cow. The 2021 fat basis import forecast is reduced on lower expected imports of butterfat; fat basis exports are raised as higher shipments of butterfat more than offset lower forecast cheese exports.

On a skim-solids basis, the import forecast is unchanged due to offsetting changes in imports of a number of dairy products while the export forecast is lowered, reflecting expectations of lower lactose shipments which are partly offset by higher exports of skim/nonfat milk powder.

The annual cheese price forecast is unchanged from last month as weaker prices in the first part of 2021 are offset by improved demand later in the year. Butter, nonfat dry milk, and whey price forecasts are raised from last month with expected improvements in both domestic and export demand.

These higher product prices are reflected in higher Class III and Class IV prices. The 2021 all milk price forecast is raised to $17.75 per cwt.

I-29 Moo University Dairy Beef Short Course to be Held Virtually March 23

The I-29 Moo University Collaboration will host its seventh annual Dairy Beef Short Course March 23. This year the educational opportunity will be offered as a webinar rather than face-to-face due to the COVID-19 situation. The event is geared toward producers and industry involved in dairy beef production but is open to the public.

Using Executive Analysis Reports From DHI

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team monthly webinar series continues on Wednesday, March 17 from 12 noon to 1 pm. This program will focus on Executive Analysis Reports available through DHI including the Transition cow management reports, and the udder health monitor report. Greg Palas, manager of support services at DRMS at Iowa State University will present the program.

Palas will provide a hands-on webinar reviewing report generation and points on using the reports to tweak herd management.

Sioux County Leads Iowa In Corn Silage Production

In 2020, Sioux County led all Iowa counties in total corn silage production, with 919,000 tons according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Lyon (579,000), Winneshiek (386,000), Dubuque (295,000) and Clay (294,000) rounded out the top five highest producing counties.

Clayton County had the highest yield with an average of 23.5 tons per acre. Sioux, Cerro Gordo and Delaware were tied for second highest yields at 22.5 tons per acre. There were 21 counties that had an average yield of 20.0 or more tons per acre.

Yields are derived from production divided by area harvested. Only published estimates were considered in rankings of counties.
