Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources have collaborated to create the Flooding in Iowa project – a series of 21 web-based videos and related materials designed to educate the public about floodplains, flood risks and basic floodplain management principles.
The videos and related materials are divided into five categories: (1) Introduction to the National Flood Insurance Program; (2) Understanding Flooding; (3) Floodplain Mapping; (4) Floodplain Regulation; and (5) Flood Insurance. The topics are addressed with as little technical terminology as possible. Viewers do not need any background in engineering, hydrology or land use regulations to follow and understand the video series. The Flooding in Iowa videos are designed for use by a variety of audiences with an interest in floodplains and floodplain management, including public officials, local and state agencies, private industry professionals and staff, not-for-profit organizations, and Iowa citizens and landowners. A brochure describing the project is available for download here (Adobe Reader required).
