Keep Calm and Carrot On -Region 20

The Region 20 Rising Stars had their second week in Corse Elementary working with 3rd, 4th, and 5thgraders. Students learned how the food we eat relates to plants and recognized the influence plants have on our food. The Rising Stars demonstrated all the different parts of the plants (Roots, Stems, Leaves, Flowers, Fruits, and Seeds), engaging the students in many activities.

Students took turns experiencing the smoothie bike from previous weeks and learning kitchen skills in the classroom by making a Carrot Raisin Salad. Students were first taught how to properly hold the carrots and reviewed common kitchen safety. Students then had the opportunity to peel and shred carrots, some students for the first time!

Once all the ingredients were in the mixing bowl, one lucky student was in charge of mixing it all together. Come taste time, a lot of the students were hesitant to try the Carrot Raisin Salad, but after the first bite, the sweet snack was gone in seconds!

Each ingredient represents apart of the plant-Carrot Raisin Salad Ingredients include: Fat Free Vanilla Greek Yogurt, Local Carrots (Root), Raisins (Fruit), and Sunflower Seeds (Seed).

Field Trip!

Hello it’s Joi from Region 5!

Last week I was able to tag along with Cindy, our Iowa Nutrition Network (INN) School Grant Project Director/Educator, to visit a few of the schools around Sioux City to teach elementary school kids a lesson on berries. The Iowa Nutrition Network School Grant Program takes place in Iowa schools where 60% or more of the students qualify for free and reduced meals. This program was put in place to increase the likelihood that the families who qualify for free and reduced meals are able to make healthy food choices.

Cindy travels to different schools throughout the year and helps facilitate the Pick a Better Snack Program. Children who participate in this program are able to learn about and try new vegetables that they might not get the chance to try otherwise. Walking through the halls, you could hear all the children yelling “HELLO MRS. Z!” as Cindy toted around her cooler of materials. They were all waiting excitedly for Mrs. Z. to come to their class.

Visiting the classes was a nice change up from the summer camps that we’ve been working on so far. I was a little nervous to teach the kids at first, but with Cindy’s guidance, I started to relax and feel more comfortable around the children. I read a book about seeds, took the kids on a bear hunt (full of singing and dancing) and demonstrated how to create a yummy fruit pizza using rice cakes, berries, and cream cheese. All of the children seemed interested in the activities that we did and loved the fruit pizza! We did around 5 classroom visits, doing the same lesson for each group, but the personalities of the kids were all different. From the little time I spent at the schools, I realized how much I loved teaching the lessons. I can’t wait to come back!
