Fresh apples…

September 7, 2010

I love them. Crisp. Crunchy. Juicy. And full of flavor.

It makes my day when I can be out riding my bike and find an apple tree close to the path—just waiting to provide a snack. When they are free, I love them no matter what variety of apple it is.

When I buy apples, I select the variety based on taste, cost, and how I am going to use them. The best cooking apples have a good sweet-tart balance and their flesh doesn’t break down as they cook.

If you’re an Iowan who likes to grow or buy fresh apples, you might like to read the ISU Publication called Iowa-Grown Apples. It gives a little history of Iowa Apple production, plus shopping, storage, and eating tips.

  1. My brother recommended I would possibly like this website. He was totally right. This submit truly made my day. You cann’t believe simply how so much time I had spent for this info! Thanks!

  2. What is the net number of calories that you lose when eating peaches, oranges, apples, carrots and celery? I know that these foods are all listed as negative calorie, meaning that the calories to digest them is more than the calories you gain from eating them but exactly how many calories do you lose for eating one peach?.

  3. Some people claim that there are foods (such as celery, cucumbers) that actually take more calories to chew, digest, and store than there are in the food. Thus, you burn more calories when you eat the food and end up losing weight! The problem is, there are no such things as negative calorie foods. While you do burn up some calories when you eat a food in order to process that food, it is roughly equal to 10% of that food’s calories. Thus, the calories burned are always less than the calories in the food.

  4. I used to be more than happy to search out this net-site.I needed to thanks to your time for this wonderful read!! I positively enjoying every little little bit of it and I’ve you bookmarked to check out new stuff you blog post.
