Monthly Dairy Webinar Feb. 5 to Focus on Cyber Security and AI on the Farm

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team monthly webinar series continues on Wednesday, February 5 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. This program will be presented by Alexis Stevens and focus on Cyber Security and AI on the Farm

Alexis Stevens, Iowa State University and Outreach Extension farm management specialist for 11 counties in west central Iowa will present on cyber security and AI on the farm. Her presentation will help to strengthen the digital protections in place for farm businesses and families.

Producers, dairy consultants and industry reps are encouraged to attend the free webinar live from noon to 1:00 p.m. on February 5 by registering at least one hour before the webinar at:

Sign-Up For 2025 DMC Begins Jan. 29

The USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) has opened the enrollment in the Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program. The enrollment period runs from January 29 to March 31, 2025.

At $0.15 per hundredweight for $9.50 coverage, risk protection through DMC is a often a no-brainer investment, but this year more investigation is required. Producers are urged to get in touch with their local Farm Service Agency office to initiate the sign-up process.

Federal Milk Marketing Order Referendum Passes In All 11 Market Orders

On Jan. 16, 2025 the USDA announced that the Federal Milk Marketing Order (FMMO) referendum passed in all 11 FMMOs. The final rule was posted in the Federal Register on Jan. 17.

During the national hearing in Carmel, Indiana the AMS gathered testimonies and evidence supporting 21 proposals from the dairy industry, leading to essential reforms in milk pricing. After the hearing, a recommended decision was issued on July 1, 2024, and subsequently published in the Federal Register on July 15, 2024. This marked the commencement of a 60-day public comment period, during which only 128 comments were received.

The final rule amends pricing provisions in each of the 11 FMMOs and is effective June 1, 2025, except for the amendments to the skim milk composition factors, which will be implemented on Dec. 1, 2025, and will apply to milk marketed on and after these dates.

Dairy Margin Coverage Enrollment Opens Jan 29

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the 2025 enrollment periods for the Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) a key safety-net program for dairy producers. Producers can submit DMC applications to USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) for the 2025 coverage year from Jan. 29 to March 31. As in the past, DMC provides producers with price support to help offset milk and feed price differences.

Urban Cow Program Kicks-off In Woodbury County

The trend of people using their homestead to grow some of their own food is expanding to growing their own eggs and dairy. “Before you can grow your food source there is some work and research that needs to be done,” according to ISU Extension and Outreach Dairy Specialist Fred Hall. “Understanding your goals and resources, understanding the animals you will be caring and providing for, and finally understanding the systems required for your new lifestyle are all important factors” says Hall.
