Dairy Directions Series Jan 7 in Sac City and Jan 8 in Pocahontas

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team will host its annual Dairy Directions Series January 7 in Sac City and January 8 in Pocahontas.

The series will focus on four topics: Cyber security and AI on the farm, a Water outlook, A commodity outlook plus what’s going on at the ISU dairy; and a review of dairy markets.

“For years dairy producers have been a leader on using technology on the farm and now we have to learn how to protect our investments against cyber-attacks,” said Fred Hall, Northwest Iowa Dairy Specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “We will also review how climate change is effecting our available water, get an update on the commodity market, hear what’s going on at the ISU dairy plus take a look at the milk markets.”

Iowa Production and Cow Numbers Up In November

Milk production in Iowa during November 2024 totaled 492 million pounds, up 3 percent from the previous November according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Milk Production report. The average number of milk cows during November, at 245,000 head, was 2,000 above last month and up 6,000 from November 2023. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,010 pounds, up 20 pounds from last November.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team Host “Virtual Chat 5” to Discuss Latest Information On HPAI In Ruminants and Poultry

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team is hosting another “Virtual Chat” to discuss the latest information on HPAI in dairy herds and poultry flocks.

The conversation will include the latest information on poultry flock outbreaks and testing requirements for dairy herds. The agenda includes:

  • Drew Magstadt DVM, ISU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory   Perspectives on diagnostic tests
  • Yuko Sato DVM, ISU Vet College:  What has changed with poultry? What can the dairy industry learn from the poultry industry? How are we cooperating?
  • Jeff Kaisand DVM, Iowa State Vet:  State’s perspective on HPAIV in dairy cows
  • Jurgen Ehler, Iowa’s plan to collect silo samples
  • Pat Gorden DVM, ISU Vet College:  Iowa State diagnostics and research projects
  • Q&A

Producers, dairy consultants, and industry reps are encouraged to attend the free virtual chat at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, December 17. No registration is required.

Milk Powder Drags Down Dairy Exports

The United States Dairy Export Council blog reports October U.S. dairy exports declined 2 percent year-over-year (YOY) in milk solids equivalent (MSE) terms. While U.S. cheese exports continued to soar, higher U.S. prices on low-protein whey and nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder (NFDM/SMP) created headwinds for U.S. suppliers, particularly in Southeast Asia. U.S. MSE volume was the lowest since January. October’s U.S. dairy exports totaled 478.3 million pounds, a 1.9 percent decline year over year. With only two months left of 2024, cumulative exports were 1.6 percent ahead of 2023, bolstered by a strong performance earlier in the year.

Butter Is Up and Ice Cream Is Down- US Annual Dairy Consumption Data Shows What Consumers Are After

Americans set a record for dairy consumption in 2023 with per capita consumption coming in at 661 lbs. per person, up 7 lbs. over the previous year and matching the record set in 2021. According to the International Dairy Foods Association, this growth was mainly driven by a surging demand for more butter and cheese.
